2018, Nockies Palette Chardonnay, Hawke's Bay

Review by Michael Cooper in March 2019:

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

“The bold, almost brash 2018 vintage (4.5*) was made for Nockie's Palette (in Central Otago) by Clearview Estate, at Te Awanga, in Hawke's Bay. Bright, light yellow/green, it is a powerful wine, crafted in a very upfront style, with concentrated, ripe stonefruit flavours, buttery and toasty notes adding complexity, balanced acidity, and loads of drink-young appeal.”

Review by Bob Campbell in April 2019:

Rating: 91/100

“Nockie's Palette is a project conceived by Central Otago winemaker and artist, Michael Nock, to offer a collection of wines by winemakers that he considers are among the world's best in a range of different grape varieties. They include John Duval (Australia), Pete Bartle (Central Otago) and Tim Turvey (Hawke's Bay). It's a weighty chardonnay with citrus, apple, pineapple and subtle oak flavours supported by tangy acidity. Accessible but a little tight at this stage. Needs time.”

Review by Cameron J. Douglas in March 2019:

Rating: 88/100

“Nutty creamy buttery bouquet. Aromas of vanilla and cashew baked stone-fruits and grapefruit. Dry with flavours that match the nose, weighty and creamy with some new wood raw energy, warming alcohol , balanced acid line , medium length and finish. A young wine with integration and harmonies of Chardonnay still underway. Best to cellar for another 12 months and taste again in early 2020. For best served with handmade fettuccine, cream and smoked salmon, capers, Parmesan and baby spinach.”

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Chardonnay

COUNTRY: New Zealand

REGION: Te Awanga, Hawkes Bay

PH: 3.56

TOTAL ACID: 5.90g/l

COLOUR: Golden

Strong oak and butter notes, supported by a full palate.

Hand picked then whole bunch pressed. The juice was lightly settled at ambient temperatures. Long, cool fermentation ensued and the resulting wine shows classic pear and butter-scotch characters. Full malolactic fermentation underpinning a full blown oak experience of vanilla and toast drive the wine back to the Chardonnay’s of old.

Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate possesses lively and vibrant flavours of white stonefruits and white florals with subtle nutty notes adding interest. The palate is elegantly concentrated with a well-driven core and line, with fresh acidity enlivening the mouthfeel.
